MIT Professor Allegedly Hid Extensive Ties to Chinese Regime: DOJ

A Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor allegedly concealed his extensive ties to groups connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in a federal grant application, it was announced by the Justice Department on Thursday. Dr. Gang Chen, 56, was charged in a criminal complaint with making false statements on a tax return, wire fraud, and failing to file a foreign bank account report, said the Department of Justice (DOJ). Chen, who was born in China, serves as the head of the MIT Pappalardo Micro/Nano Engineering Laboratory and Director of the Solid-State Solar Thermal Energy Conversion Center, and since about 2013, Chen has been funded by grants awarded by federal agencies. “Since 2012, Chen has allegedly held various appointments with the [CCP] designed to promote” China’s “technological and scientific development by providing advice and expertise” and sometimes directly to CCP officials “often in exchange for financial compensation.’ That included acting as …
